Original summary
The second Zashiki Warashi episode digs into the inn’s history and the motives of the spirits around Shino. As the Medicine Seller identifies what the haunting is and why it remains, the opening case completes the show’s Form, Truth, and Reason rule set.
What happens and why it matters
This chapter belongs to the Zashiki Warashi case. Instead of treating the spirit as a simple enemy, the episode turns rooms, objects, witness statements, and fear into evidence. The Medicine Seller watches for contradictions, waits until the shape of the haunting becomes legible, and pushes the people around him toward the truth that gives the mononoke power. The opening inn story makes shelter itself frightening: a woman seeks safety, the building hides older violence, and the spirits force the adults to face what the room remembers.
PopRot’s read: Mononoke is at its best when the answer is moral as much as supernatural. The monster is solved only when a human wound is named clearly enough for the exorcism to have meaning.
