Original Summary
Kun is used to being the center of his parents’ world. When baby Mirai arrives, everyday family routines suddenly feel like a betrayal: toys are shared, attention is divided, and Kun’s feelings are too big for his small vocabulary. The garden outside the family home becomes a gateway into encounters with relatives at different points in time, including Mirai as an older girl, his mother as a child, the family dog in a more humanized form, and his great-grandfather as a young man.
Detailed What-Happens Recap
The film begins with a realistic problem: a preschooler cannot process that a new baby is not a rival stealing love from him. Kun lashes out, sulks, and retreats into his train-filled imagination. Each magical encounter reframes one part of that jealousy. Yukko shows him what displacement feels like. His mother’s childhood lets him see that adults were once impulsive children. His great-grandfather’s story connects courage to family history. Future Mirai turns the baby from an interruption into a person with a life that extends beyond the present moment.
Rather than building a rule-heavy time-travel plot, the movie uses fantasy as emotional architecture. Kun visits the past and future when he needs a lesson, not when the audience needs exposition. By the final movement, his fear of being left behind becomes a larger fear of losing his place in the family tree, and the resolution asks him to accept that being a big brother is not a demotion but a new connection.
