Original summary
Kun is used to being the center of his parents’ attention. When baby Mirai arrives, his world shrinks into jealousy: shared time, toys, routines, and parental patience all feel like things being taken away. The family house, especially its garden, begins opening into encounters with relatives across time. Kun meets versions of family members who help him understand that every person in his home has a history, a future, and feelings that do not begin and end with him.
What happens in the film
The movie starts from an ordinary domestic crisis: a young child cannot process becoming an older brother. Rather than punishing Kun for that jealousy, the story externalizes it. Yukko, the family dog, becomes a mirror for feeling replaced. Future Mirai gives Kun a version of his sister he can talk to. Encounters with his mother’s childhood and his great-grandfather’s youth show that adults were once vulnerable children too, and that the family Kun takes for granted was shaped by risk, care, disappointment, recovery, and chance.
The climactic train-station material gathers those lessons into a question of identity. Kun’s love of trains becomes more than a hobby: routes, names, departures, and destinations become the language the film uses for belonging. He has to recognize his place in the family line without erasing Mirai’s place beside him.
