The movie’s factions are not armies. They are overlapping communities: Miyori’s family, the rural village, the forest spirits, and the outside human pressures that threaten the land.
Miyori’s family
Family conflict is the reason Miyori arrives closed off. Her relatives around the countryside home give the story a domestic base and show that care can be imperfect, quiet, and still meaningful.
The forest spirits
The spirits are the movie’s most important non-human group. They turn nature into a social world with memory and vulnerability, which makes environmental damage feel like harm to neighbors rather than loss of scenery.
The human community
Local adults and children help Miyori understand the countryside as a place where people live with, misunderstand, or protect nature. The tension between human convenience and forest survival gives the film its moral pressure.
