Short summary

Mai Minase and Tomonari Kasumi collapse after an encounter in The World, but only Mai wakes up quickly. The episode follows Mai’s attempt to return to normal life while Junichiro Tokuoka starts asking the questions C.C. Corp would rather keep quiet.

Detailed what-happens recap

The case starts shortly after major game-side trouble has already begun. Tomonari invites Mai into The World, where she is still a newcomer rather than a veteran player. At the field tied to the incident, Mai hears the unnerving A-in-C-major tone and the situation escalates into a Data Drain-linked collapse. Tomonari remains unconscious; Mai survives, but the sound stays with her.

That survival makes Mai unusual. The hospital scenes matter because Liminality is not treating the event like normal anime battle damage. Families, doctors, school absences, and everyday anxiety become part of the plot. Mai is physically awake, but she is carrying evidence no medical chart can explain.

Tokuoka’s arrival changes the direction of the episode. As a former C.C. Corp figure, he understands enough about The World to suspect a corporate and system-level cover-up. He does not simply comfort Mai; he recruits her as the one witness whose perception may lead to the truth.

The early clues point toward Tomonari’s contacts, player identity, and the gap between what C.C. Corp can admit publicly and what is really happening inside the game. By the end, Mai is no longer just the survivor of a strange accident. She is the first human link in a larger investigation.
