WNBA Team-Building Glossary: Stars, Spacing, Defense, Depth, and Fit

Stars and role clarity
Every strong roster needs high-end creators, but the best teams also define jobs clearly. A star may carry late-clock offense, while a connective passer, spot-up shooter, screen-setter, or defensive stopper makes the star’s job easier. Role clarity keeps possessions organized when games tighten.
Spacing and defensive balance
Spacing describes how well an offense keeps driving lanes open and punishes help defense. Defensive balance describes whether a team can guard at the point of attack, protect the paint, rebound, and switch or recover without giving up easy shots. The strongest rosters usually avoid being one-dimensional.
Depth and fit
Depth matters because injuries, foul trouble, travel, and matchup changes are part of a long season. Fit asks whether the players’ strengths amplify each other. A bench scorer, backup ball-handler, or versatile forward can be more valuable when they solve a specific team need.
