Summary
A damaging rumor about Alice shows how social information can injure someone as deeply as physical violence. Lain’s alternate selves and her ability to affect memory become central. This is the emotional core of the middle run because the Wired’s abstraction suddenly hurts Lain’s closest real friendship.
