Summary
The finale turns inward. Lain decides what kind of existence protects the people she loves, especially Alice, and the series resolves through memory, absence, and a changed relationship to the Wired. It does not offer a simple sci-fi explanation; it closes as a meditation on identity, sacrifice, and connection.
What happens in the episode
The episode uses fragmented scenes, school conversation, technology, and unsettling pauses rather than conventional action. Its important movement is psychological: Lain learns a new rule about the Wired, another person reacts to the rumor version of Lain, and the real-world boundary becomes less stable.
