What Happens in This Episode
Episode 7, “The Incident,” uses its immediate mission to reveal another pressure point in the larger Night Raid 1931 setup. This episode was streamed exclusively online due to the controversy of the Mukden Incident. It depicts the point of view of the Japanese in Manchuria during the events leading up to the Mukden Incident. It revolves around two young newspaper reporters who are riding on the South Manchuria Railway and run into Kanji Ishiwara, the Lieutenant Colonel of the Kwantung Army who helped devise the bombing so that Japan could attack Manchuria out of “self-defense”. Other key historical figures are also present such as Seishirō Itagaki and Yoshitsugu Tatekawa. PopRot reads the episode through three lenses: what the team is asked to do, which personal loyalty is stressed, and what the mission says about Shanghai, Manchuria, Sakurai Kikan, or Isao’s widening influence.
The important through-line is not only the case itself. Each episode tests how far the operatives can rely on their powers, orders, and one another when the political picture keeps changing. That makes even quieter surveillance or investigation chapters useful for understanding the later betrayals and endgame.
