What Happens in This Episode
Episode 5, “Negative of Summer,” uses its immediate mission to reveal another pressure point in the larger Night Raid 1931 setup. However, he is captured and tortured by the Kuomintang and discovers that Nishio is a spy for the Communist Party of China. PopRot reads the episode through three lenses: what the team is asked to do, which personal loyalty is stressed, and what the mission says about Shanghai, Manchuria, Sakurai Kikan, or Isao’s widening influence.
The important through-line is not only the case itself. Each episode tests how far the operatives can rely on their powers, orders, and one another when the political picture keeps changing. That makes even quieter surveillance or investigation chapters useful for understanding the later betrayals and endgame.
