Spoiler note: this profile discusses the character’s broad role across Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.
Who they are
Tanda is a Yaku herbalist who lives in the mountains. Even though he is the pupil of Torogai his skill as a shaman is lacking. However he is very skilled as a doctor, in part due to the fact that he always treated Balsa’s wounds in the past. At the time of the main story, Tanda and Balsa have been friends for nearly 20 years. During this time, Tanda’s affections for Balsa have grown but he has yet to act on them for reasons that are later revealed. This relationship is depicted very realistically and adds great depth to both Tanda’s and Balsa’s characters.
Personality and role
Tanda is a herbalist and Balsa’s close ally. He gives the story its grounded, healing side and often bridges Balsa’s dangerous road with everyday care, medicine, and emotional honesty.
Abilities and strengths
Tanda is best understood through practical strengths rather than a video-game power list. In Moribito, skill means spear technique, court learning, field medicine, shamanic knowledge, emotional resilience, or the ability to survive without imperial protection.
Story relevance
The character matters because Seirei no Moribito is built around responsibility: who protects Chagum, who defines truth, and who pays when myth and politics collide. Tanda adds a specific angle to that conflict.
