Spoiler note: this profile discusses the character’s broad role across Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit.

Who they are

The second prince of the Imperial Family. Chagum bears the egg of the water spirit originally defeated by his ancestors. The spirit is said to be the cause of the “Drought Sign” read by the Empire’s Star Diviners and in order to not shame the Imperial Family, Chagum has been silently condemned to death by his father, the emperor. To save her son, the empress hired Balsa to protect the Chagum’s life and flee from the imperial palace.

Personality and role

Chagum is the imperial prince carrying the egg of the water spirit. His journey turns him from a sheltered royal child into someone forced to understand hunger, travel, common life, and the cost of being treated as a political symbol.

Abilities and strengths

Chagum is best understood through practical strengths rather than a video-game power list. In Moribito, skill means spear technique, court learning, field medicine, shamanic knowledge, emotional resilience, or the ability to survive without imperial protection.

Story relevance

The character matters because Seirei no Moribito is built around responsibility: who protects Chagum, who defines truth, and who pays when myth and politics collide. Chagum adds a specific angle to that conflict.
