Gender and Identity Mechanics Explained

The setting mechanic is that people are born without gender and usually shift toward a desired gender around twelve. Hinase’s delayed shift makes that mechanic dramatic: the story asks what happens when the body, society, romance, and self-understanding do not move on the same schedule.
