PopRot recommends watching Gift after at least some familiarity with .hack//SIGN and the original .hack game storyline. It is not a clean franchise starting point because its jokes depend on recognition.
- Start with a main .hack story such as SIGN or the early game-era narrative.
- Use Gift as a bonus crossover once the cast feels familiar.
- Do not expect a serious lore-expansion episode; expect parody, hot-springs-event chaos, and fan-service comedy.
