The main story thread of .hack//G.U. Returner is the Hidden Forbidden Festival reunion. It is a small arc by runtime, but it matters because it moves the G.U. cast out of crisis mode and into a space where Ovan can be remembered, questioned, and hoped for.
The festival works as a stage for closure. Instead of a long dungeon crawl, the OVA uses a message, a gathering place, and a symbolic AIDA Chim Chim to underline how much the players have changed since the darker parts of the G.U. conflict.
Why Ovan is the emotional center
