Original summary
The Bakeneko mystery deepens as testimony, journalism, money, and official authority collide. The Medicine Seller’s task is not only to identify the cat spirit, but to force the passengers to admit why it appeared.
What happens and why it matters
This chapter belongs to the Bakeneko case. Instead of treating the spirit as a simple enemy, the episode turns rooms, objects, witness statements, and fear into evidence. The Medicine Seller watches for contradictions, waits until the shape of the haunting becomes legible, and pushes the people around him toward the truth that gives the mononoke power. The final Bakeneko case puts old privilege on a modern train, making the witnesses physically trapped with the consequences of a crime they would rather keep moving past.
PopRot’s read: Mononoke is at its best when the answer is moral as much as supernatural. The monster is solved only when a human wound is named clearly enough for the exorcism to have meaning.
