Original summary
The Nue case opens around incense, status, and refined competition. Mononoke uses the rules of an elegant game as a trap: the more polished the ritual looks, the more suspicious its participants become.
What happens and why it matters
This chapter belongs to the Nue case. Instead of treating the spirit as a simple enemy, the episode turns rooms, objects, witness statements, and fear into evidence. The Medicine Seller watches for contradictions, waits until the shape of the haunting becomes legible, and pushes the people around him toward the truth that gives the mononoke power. The incense-game/Nue case is built like a puzzle box: taste, status, and ritual knowledge become evidence, and elegance hides predation.
