What Millennium Actress Is About
A pair of documentary filmmakers visit Chiyoko after the collapse of the old Ginei studio. When Genya returns a key from her past, Chiyoko’s interview becomes a rush through memory: childhood, wartime fear, movie sets, samurai adventures, kaiju-style spectacle, and a space-age finale all fold into one emotional pursuit.
Why the Film Matters
The movie is less a conventional mystery than a portrait of longing. Kon uses editing as the storytelling engine: Chiyoko runs from scene to scene, from role to role, and from era to era, until the line between her life and her films becomes the point of the experience.
