Eiri Masami (Serial Experiments Lain Character Guide)

Eiri Masami in Serial Experiments Lain
Spoiler note: discusses the character’s full-series role and thematic purpose.
Who they are
Eiri Masami is the former Tachibana researcher who presents himself as a god of the Wired. PopRot role label: major antagonist.
Role in the story
Eiri is manipulative, messianic, and obsessed with Protocol 7. His power is ideological as much as technical: he wants people to accept the Wired as a higher reality and himself as its divine administrator.
Research note rewritten for PopRot: Eiri Masami is best understood through the character’s relationship to Lain, the Wired, and the show’s collapsing split between private identity and public rumor.
Personality and abilities
Eiri matters because Serial Experiments Lain treats personality as something technology can expose, split, fake, or overwrite. Their “ability” may be technical skill, emotional honesty, surveillance authority, social pressure, or direct control inside the Wired.
