Lain Iwakura (Serial Experiments Lain Character Guide)

Lain Iwakura in Serial Experiments Lain
Spoiler note: discusses the character’s full-series role and thematic purpose.
Who they are
Lain Iwakura is a withdrawn middle-schooler whose identity becomes inseparable from the Wired. PopRot role label: main character.
Role in the story
Quiet, observant, and initially socially unsure, Lain becomes frighteningly capable with Navi hardware and with the networked reality that the series calls the Wired. Her story relevance is the spine of the anime: every rumor, protocol, duplicate self, and godlike claim bends back toward who Lain really is.
Research note rewritten for PopRot: Lain, the main character of Serial Experiments Lain, is a 14 year old girl who uncovers her true nature through the series. She is first depicted as a shy junior high school student with few friends or interests. She later grows multiple, bolder personalities, both in the physical and Wired worlds.
Personality and abilities
Lain matters because Serial Experiments Lain treats personality as something technology can expose, split, fake, or overwrite. Their “ability” may be technical skill, emotional honesty, surveillance authority, social pressure, or direct control inside the Wired.
